The Tsunan Snow Festival (津南雪まつり) is a mid-March weekend event in the mountains of southern Niigata where 3,000–5,000 attendees gather on snow-covered rice paddies to simultaneously release sky lanterns at dusk. The visual effect — thousands of paper lanterns rising against twilight, each carrying a handwritten wish — has become one of Japan's most photographed winter events despite the town's population of only 9,000.
