서기 725년 창건된 우사신궁은 일본 전역 4만 개가 넘는 모든 하치만 신사의 총본산이다. 하치만은 신격화된 오진 천황과 불교적 요소가 결합된 습합신으로 — 우사신궁을 신도와 불교가 융합된 역사적으로 중요한 장소로 만든다. 이 신사 단지는 독특한 하치만즈쿠리 건축 양식(두 건물이 하나의 지붕 아래 연결된 형태)의 세 개 본전을 갖추고 있다.
오모토산 기슭에서 신사까지 이어지는 참배길은 맑은 강 위 두 개의 주홍빛 다리를 건너고, 숲속 돌계단을 오르며, 여러 개의 도리이를 지나야 한다 — 20분간의 오름은 의례적인 여정을 만들어낸다.
