Yakage was the eighteenth station on the Sanyodo highway, and unusually both of its principal inns survive: the honjin, where daimyo on their journeys to Edo stayed, and the wakihonjin that took the overflow. Both the Ishii and the Takakusa houses are Important Cultural Properties, and no other post town in Japan has kept the pair intact. The Ishii family also brewed sake, so the honjin comes with its storehouses and brewing rooms attached rather than as a bare reception hall.

The street between them was selected as an Important Preservation District in 2020, which is recent enough that the town is still quiet. Princess Atsuhime is recorded as having stopped here on her way to marry into the Tokugawa house, and the town runs a daimyo procession re-enactment in November.

인사이더 가이드

**Both inns survive, which is the point.** Honjin and wakihonjin in the same street, both Important Cultural Properties. Post towns elsewhere have one or neither. **The honjin was also a brewery.** The Ishii house made sake, so the site includes the storehouses and working rooms rather than just the rooms daimyo slept in. It is the more interesting half. **Selected in 2020, so it is still quiet.** Yakage was designated a preservation district long after the famous ones and has not yet acquired the coach traffic. **Second Sunday of November for the procession.** The town re-enacts a daimyo procession through the street, which is the one day it is busy. **Kurashiki is nearby.** Yakage makes the natural half-day counterweight to the Bikan quarter — same era, same region, a fraction of the people.
