Yamagata Hina Dolls — Historic March Doll Festival
The Hina Matsuri (雛祭り, Girls' Day or Doll Festival) on March 3rd is celebrated throughout Japan, but Yamagata takes special pride in the tradition due to its historic connection to Kyoto court culture during the Edo period. Wealthy Yamagata merchant families commissioned elaborate hina doll sets from Kyoto artisans, some comprising 15-30 dolls arranged on seven-tiered platforms representing the Heian court. These antique doll collections, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, are displayed publicly during 'Yamagata Hina Kaido' (Yamagata Hina Road) from late February through early April, when historic buildings, museums, and even shops throughout Yamagata City set up their family heirloom doll collections for public viewing. The dolls feature intricate silk kimono, gold-leaf accessories, and hand-painted faces — some sets are valued at millions of yen. The festival includes traditional amazake (sweet fermented rice drink) service, hina-arare (sweet rice crackers) tasting, and workshops where children can arrange miniature doll sets.
