Amaharashi Coast — Tateyama Range Rising from the Sea

Amaharashi Coast (雨晴海岸) is a 3km stretch of rocky coastline on Toyama Bay, famous for views of the 3,000-meter Tateyama mountain range rising directly from the sea — a rare geographical phenomenon where high mountains appear to emerge from ocean waves with no intervening foothills. On clear days, the peaks of Mt. Tsurugi (2,999m), Mt. Tateyama (3,015m), and surrounding Alps are visible across the bay, creating one of Japan's most dramatic coastal panoramas.

The coast is dotted with distinctive rock formations including the Noto Iwa (女岩, 'Woman Rock') — a large offshore rock visible from the beach. The shoreline is accessible via walking paths and small beaches, offering multiple vantage points for mountain photography. The coast is particularly photogenic at sunrise (mountain silhouettes) and sunset (backlit peaks with orange sky).

Amaharashi was celebrated in classical Japanese poetry and is considered one of the 'best views of Japan.' The combination of sea, mountain, and rocky coast creates layered depth and visual drama rare in Japanese landscapes.
