Godaido Temple
Godaido Temple stands as one of Matsushima's most iconic landmarks, a small vermillion Buddhist hall perched on a tiny island connected to the mainland by a distinctive red bridge with gaps between the boards. The temple building itself is modest in size, but its significance is profound as one of the Tohoku region's oldest temple structures, originally built in 807 and reconstructed in 1604 by Date Masamune. The name Godaido translates to 'Hall of Five Wisdom Kings,' referring to the Buddhist guardian deities enshrined within. The hall's exterior features intricate zodiac animal carvings on the beams supporting the eaves, representing the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac in remarkable sculptural detail. These carvings demonstrate the artistic sophistication of early Edo-period Buddhist architecture. The temple's location on a small rocky island provides photogenic views from multiple angles, with the red bridge and vermillion hall standing out dramatically against blue sky and green pines. The wooden bridge leading to the temple, called Sukashibashi or 'see-through bridge,' was deliberately constructed with gaps between the slats, requiring visitors to watch their footing carefully and maintain mindful attention as they approach the sacred space, a design element that serves both practical and spiritual purposes by encouraging presence and awareness.
