Gokayama Ainokura — location in Gifu, Shirakawa-go

Gifu · Shirakawa-go

36.4183°N, 136.9159°E

Gokayama's Ainokura (相倉集落) is Shirakawa-go's smaller, quieter neighbor — a hamlet of 20 gassho-zukuri farmhouses set on a hillside terrace overlooking rice paddies and the Shogawa River valley. It shares UNESCO World Heritage status with Shirakawa-go but receives far fewer visitors, preserving a more intimate, lived-in atmosphere. The village is small enough to walk in 20 minutes yet retains full authenticity — locals still cultivate rice, maintain thatched roofs communally, and welcome visitors into farmhouse museums.

Ainokura's elevated setting provides natural panoramas without needing to climb observation platforms. The absence of souvenir shops and tour buses allows the sound of wind through thatch, running water, and birdsong to dominate. The village's Ainokura Minzoku-kan (folk museum) displays tools for thatching, silkworm cultivation, and washi papermaking — the three pillars of Gokayama's economy for 300 years.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Why visit over Shirakawa-go:** Ainokura offers the same architectural experience with 90% fewer people. Weekday mornings (9:00–11:00) often see zero tour buses. Photographers preferring composition control over iconic shots find Ainokura superior — you can frame thatched roofs without dodging selfie sticks. **Minshuku stays:** Ainokura has three family-run gassho minshuku (Matsuya, Yosuke, Gorosaku). Staying overnight means dining by the irori hearth, sleeping under 200-year-old thatch, and experiencing the village after day-trippers leave. Morning mist (May–October) creates dreamlike conditions for photography. **Combined route:** The World Heritage Bus makes a loop connecting Ainokura, Suganuma, and Shirakawa-go. Start at Ainokura (quiet morning), proceed to Suganuma (smallest hamlet, 9 houses, washi paper workshops), then Shirakawa-go in late afternoon when crowds thin. Full loop requires one long day or two days with overnight in Shirakawa-go. **Seasonal highlights:** Autumn foliage (late October–early November) sets the valley ablaze. Winter snow (December–March) is heavier than Shirakawa-go with fewer visitors but requires 4WD or bus. Spring rice planting (May) reflects the thatched roofs in flooded paddies — a photographer's secret season.
