Hachigata was the Hojo clan's forward castle on the Arakawa, built on a natural terrace with the river cutting a cliff on one side and a tributary on the other, so that only one approach needed defending. Hojo Ujikuni held it in 1590 against a combined force under Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu, several times his own numbers, for about a month before surrendering on terms — one of the more respectable defences of that campaign.

Nothing was rebuilt. What survives is the earthwork: dry moats, terraced enclosures, gate footings and rebuilt sections of wattle fence laid out across a large park, which is a clearer lesson in how a Sengoku mountain castle actually worked than any reconstructed keep. A cherry tree in the grounds, over 150 years old and named after Ujikuni, flowers in late March.

Hachigata 2496-2, Yorii Town, Osato District. About 20 minutes on foot from Yorii Station, served by the Tobu Tojo, JR Hachiko and Chichibu Railway lines. The castle grounds are free and open at all hours. The Hachigata Castle History Museum opens 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM with entry until 4:00 PM; admission ¥200 adults, ¥100 high school and university students, free for junior high school and under and for those aged 70 and over. Closed Mondays, the day after public holidays and over the new year.

**The earthworks are the exhibit.** No keep, no reconstruction beyond some fencing. Walking the dry moats and the terraces is how you learn what a Sengoku castle actually was, and this is one of the better preserved examples in eastern Japan. **Ujikuni-zakura in late March.** An Edohigan cherry over 150 years old, named for the defending commander, and lit in the evening during the flowering week. **Two hundred yen for the museum, and start there.** Models and a film that make the ground outside legible.
