Tenranzan Hiking — location in Saitama, Hanno

Saitama · Hanno

35.8556°N, 139.3208°E

Mt. Tenranzan (天覧山, 197m) is Hanno's introductory hiking mountain — a gentle 40-minute ascent through cedar and deciduous forest to a summit offering panoramic views over the Hanno Basin and, on clear days, the Tokyo skyline 40 kilometers distant. Despite the low elevation, the trail provides legitimate forest bathing experience — well-maintained paths, interpretive nature signs, and quiet forest sections far from urban noise. The trailhead begins at Nohoin Temple (能仁寺), a 14th-century Zen temple with traditional rock garden.

The mountain's name ('Mountain Seen by the Emperor') derives from an 1883 visit by Emperor Meiji during military exercises. The summit features a small observation deck and monument marking the imperial visit. The ridge trail continues beyond Tenranzan to Mt. Tagonoyama (多峯主山, 271m), adding 60 minutes and more challenging terrain. The extended ridge hike offers solitude and mature forest uncommon so close to Tokyo metropolitan area.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Trail route strategy:** From Hanno Station, walk 15 minutes to Nohoin Temple (能仁寺) — the temple grounds are worth 10-minute exploration (traditional rock garden, ancient trees). The main trail begins behind the temple, ascending steadily through mixed forest. Trail markers are clear with distance/time signs every 10 minutes. The summit plateau has benches and vending machines (surprisingly). For beginners, summit and return (80 min round-trip) provides satisfying achievement. Experienced hikers should continue the ridge trail to Mt. Tagonoyama — this section sees 1/10th the traffic and offers mature forest with minimal crowds. **Seasonal timing:** Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers along the trail — Japanese violets, trillium, and mountain azaleas. Autumn (November) colors the deciduous sections gold and red. Summer is hot and humid with aggressive mosquitoes (bring repellent). Winter (December–February) offers clearest visibility for Tokyo skyline views and empty trails but requires warm layers. Early morning (7:00–9:00) provides best chance to see Japanese macaques and various bird species before daytime foot traffic drives them deeper into forest. **Tokyo skyline visibility:** Summit views extend to Tokyo on clear days — the distinctive Tokyo Skytree and Shinjuku skyscraper cluster are identifiable with binoculars (634m Skytree is easiest landmark). Best visibility: winter mornings after cold fronts when air is clearest (December–February, 30–40% of days have sufficient clarity). Summer haze and humidity reduce visibility to 10–15 kilometers making Tokyo views impossible. Check weather forecast for PM2.5 levels and visibility predictions. **Nohoin Temple details:** Temple entry ¥300, worthwhile for 15-minute contemplation before/after hiking. The temple's main hall houses a wooden Kannon statue (viewing times limited). The temple grounds include 600-year-old ginkgo tree spectacular in late November golden foliage.
