Hanamaki Onsen — Hot Spring Resort Town
Hanamaki Onsen is a collection of hot spring resort villages in the mountains west of Hanamaki City, including Hanamaki Onsen Village, Shidotaira Onsen, Namari Onsen, and Osawa Onsen. The area contains over a dozen ryokan (traditional inns) and onsen facilities fed by natural hot springs rich in minerals. The waters are alkaline and said to benefit skin, circulation, and muscle recovery. The onsen villages sit in forested valleys surrounded by mountains, offering rural tranquility and autumn foliage viewing. Hanamaki Onsen Village is the largest and most developed, with multiple large ryokan offering day-use bathing (日帰り入浴, higaeri nyuyoku) for non-staying guests. Shidotaira and Namari are smaller and more traditional. Osawa Onsen's historic wooden bathhouse dates to the Edo period and is a registered cultural property. The region is associated with poet Kenji Miyazawa, who visited frequently and wrote about the onsen in his works.
