The Toki no Kane (時の鐘, 'Bell of Time') is Kawagoe's symbol — a wooden bell tower rising 16 meters above the merchant district, manually rung four times daily (6:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00) as it has been for nearly 400 years. The sound of the bell carries across the historic district, marking time as it did in the Edo period.

The bell tower's design is functional simplicity — a wooden framework supporting a bronze bell, accessed by interior stairs leading to the bell chamber. The structure embodies traditional Japanese timekeeping: before mechanical clocks, temple and castle bells divided the day into segments. Toki no Kane is one of the last towers in Japan that maintains this daily ringing tradition using human bell-ringers rather than automation.

**Hearing the bell:** Time your visit to hear one of the four daily ringings — the 15:00 afternoon bell is ideal if visiting as a day trip from Tokyo. The sound is resonant and mellow, carrying for several blocks. Stand near the base to feel the vibration through the wooden structure. Local etiquette: pause and listen quietly when the bell rings rather than talking through it. **Photography angles:** The classic composition is from the intersection 30 meters south, shooting north with the bell tower framed by kurazukuri warehouses on both sides. Late afternoon (15:00–16:30) provides warm light on the wooden tower. The tower is illuminated after dark — night photography from the same angle creates a completely different mood. **Historical context:** The adjacent Yakushi Temple (薬師神社) was the original time-bell sponsor in the Edo period. Walk through the small temple grounds (free entry, 1-minute detour) to see the stone monuments explaining the bell's history in Japanese. The temple's ancient ginkgo tree turns brilliant gold in late November, creating a second photo opportunity framing the tower.
