Iriki is the fumoto that shows the technique best. The walls here are tamaishi-gaki — built from rounded river cobbles rather than cut stone, stacked without mortar, and topped with clipped hedges of tea and podocarpus that continue the line upward in green. Streets of them run around the site of Kiyoshiki castle, along with thatched samurai gates, a moat in front of the main gate and the wide parade ground the garrison used.

Satsuma built more than a hundred of these fortified administrative settlements instead of concentrating its warriors in one town, and Iriki is one of the best preserved, designated an Important Preservation District. It is inland from Satsumasendai, an hour by bus from Kagoshima Airport, and it is free to walk. The combination of cobble walls and green hedges in warm light is unlike any other historic district in Japan.

Access Information

Uranomyo, Iriki-cho, Satsumasendai. By airport bus from Kagoshima Airport to the Iriki-naka-mae stop then a short walk, or by car; about 40–by bus or by car from Sendai Station. Free to walk the streets; individual buildings keep their own hours.

**The walls are the exhibit.** Rounded river cobbles laid without mortar and topped with clipped hedge. Once you have seen how the courses are packed, every other Satsuma fumoto reads differently. **Walk the whole circuit.** The district runs around the old Kiyoshiki castle site with the moat, the great gate and the parade ground. Doing one street misses the plan. **Free, and quiet.** There is no admission, no coach park and generally nobody there. A weekday morning is close to solitary. **Reachable from the airport.** An hour by airport bus, which makes it a viable use of a long connection — unusual for a site this remote-feeling. **Four fumoto make a route.** Iriki, Izumi, Chiran and Kaseda are a Japan Heritage grouping. Two in a day is comfortable by car.
