Tenmonkan Arcade
Kagoshima · Kagoshima City

Tenmonkan (天文館) is Kagoshima City's main shopping and entertainment district — a covered arcade stretching 1km through the city center, lined with department stores, fashion boutiques, izakaya, and sweet shops. The area is particularly known for Satsuma sweets: karukan (light sponge cake), kasutadon (custard-filled waffle), and shirokuma (shaved ice dessert piled with condensed milk and fruit).
The arcade's name derives from an Edo-period astronomical observatory (天文館, 'astronomy hall') built by the Shimadzu clan, one of Japan's first Western-style scientific institutions.
