Ishiyama-dera (石山寺, 'Stone Mountain Temple') is a historic Buddhist temple founded in 747 CE, built on a massive natural rock formation. The temple's most famous visitor was Murasaki Shikibu, author of The Tale of Genji (11th century) — legend says she wrote parts of the novel while staying at this temple in 1004. A hall displays a statue of Murasaki writing, and the temple grounds include a small museum with Genji-related artifacts.
The temple is renowned for autumn colors (mid-November) when 2,000+ maple trees turn brilliant red and orange against the temple's stone foundations. Night illumination during autumn season (17:30–20:30) lights the maples and pagoda creating dramatic atmosphere. The combination of literary history, natural rock formations, and seasonal beauty makes Ishiyama-dera a cultural pilgrimage site.
