Mikuni Minato — Historic Port Town and Sunset Viewpoint
Mikuni (三国湊) was one of Hokuriku's most prosperous ports during the Edo and Meiji periods, serving as the coastal hub for trade between Osaka, the Japan Sea coast, and Hokkaido. The town's wealth derived from kitamae-sen cargo ships that transported rice, herring, and timber — fortunes built on these routes funded the construction of elaborate merchant houses, temples, and geisha districts that survive today.
The Kitamae-sen Historic District preserves 1.5 kilometers of Edo-period streetscape: wooden merchant houses with latticed facades (komayose-zukuri), tile-roofed warehouses (kura), and narrow alleys that terminate at the Kuzuryu River mouth. The Kyukishina-ke Residence, a former shipping magnate's mansion, is open to the public — its interior displays shipping ledgers, marine navigation tools, and luxurious furnishings that demonstrate the merchant class's wealth. The Mikuni Sunset Beach at the river mouth offers unobstructed views of the sun setting into the Sea of Japan — locals claim it's Fukui's finest sunset spot.
