Mt. Myogi is one of the strangest-looking mountains in Japan — a wall of eroded volcanic spires and needles rising abruptly out of farmland — and Myogi Shrine sits partway up its main peak, founded according to tradition in 537. The approach is a steep stone stairway through cedar, past a vermilion outer gate, and up to a heavily carved and gilded karamon gate and main hall built against the slope.

The carving is the reason to make the climb. The buildings are Edo-period, black-lacquered and densely worked with painted relief in a style closer to Nikko than to anything else in the region, and they are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. Because the shrine sits on a mountainside rather than in a town, the setting does most of the work — spires overhead, valley below. A gentler side path avoids the steepest stairway for anyone who wants the shrine without the climb.

6 Myogi, Myogi-machi, Tomioka. Five minutes by car from Matsuida-Myogi IC on the Joshin-etsu Expressway; from JR Takasaki take the Shinetsu Line to Matsuida Station, then about 10 minutes by taxi. Grounds free. The treasure hall and former imperial residence are ¥200 for adults and junior high students, ¥100 for elementary students, open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM except December 20 – January 10. Free parking at Michi-no-Eki Myogi, a short walk away.

**Take the gentler path if the stairs look wrong.** The direct stone stairway from the gate is steep and long. A less severe approach route exists alongside it and reaches the same place — choose on the day rather than committing at the bottom. **The carving needs light.** The karamon and main hall face into the slope and lose direct sun early. Late morning to early afternoon is when the gilding and painted relief actually read; by late afternoon the detail flattens out. **Park at the roadside station.** Michi-no-Eki Myogi has free parking and the shrine is a short walk from it, which is simpler than looking for space on the approach road. The station also has the only reliable food nearby. **The mountain above is not a casual walk.** Myogi's ridge traverse is a serious scramble with chains and exposure and has a real accident history. The shrine visit and the mountain are separate undertakings; do not drift upward from one into the other. **Cherry blossom and autumn are the two peaks.** Spring blossom against the rock spires and November colour are both well known within Gunma, and both draw weekend traffic to a narrow approach road. Weekdays are markedly easier.
