Isozaki Arata designed this museum in 1994 around three permanent works rather than around a collection, which is close to unique: the building and the art were commissioned together and neither exists without the other. Three galleries named Sun, Moon and Earth sit on axes taken from the local landscape, with Mount Nagi filling the window of one of them.

The Sun gallery is the one people come for. Arakawa Shusaku and Madeline Gins lined a tilted cylinder with a full-scale replica of Kyoto's Ryoanji rock garden — running up the curved wall and over the ceiling — and put benches and a seesaw at angles inside it. Standing in the room your balance stops agreeing with your eyes. It is small, it is in a town of five thousand at the foot of a mountain, and it is one of the strangest interiors in Japan.

Closed Mondays, opening the following day if Monday is a public holiday, and closed the day after a public holiday unless that falls at a weekend. **Spend time in the Sun gallery.** People walk in, register that the room is odd, and walk out in ninety seconds. The disorientation builds; ten minutes in there is a different experience from one. **The Ryoanji replica is full scale.** Not a reference to it — the fifteen stones and the raked gravel at actual size, wrapped around a tilting cylinder. **Mount Nagi is in the Moon gallery on purpose.** Isozaki set the axes of the three rooms to the surrounding landscape. The window is the work. **Verify hours before driving out.** A small municipal museum in a town of five thousand, closed Mondays and the day after holidays. It is a 30-minute drive from anywhere. **Nagi Beef and the Sun Sun Nagi farm shop.** The town's other export is beef, sold at the roadside facility near the museum, which is otherwise a place with very little to do.
