Niseko Powder Snow — Japan's Premier Ski Resort

Niseko gets dumped on. Fifteen meters of snow every season, sometimes 50cm overnight when low-pressure systems cross the Sea of Japan. The snow here doesn't pack down—it stays light and dry because Siberian air is so cold that by the time it picks up moisture over the water and hits Mt. Yotei, the crystals form small and fluffy. Locals call it 'champagne powder,' though 'Japow' has caught on with the Australian crowd who've been flying in since the early 2000s.

Four resorts share the same mountain—Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, Annupuri—all covered by one pass. You can ski groomers all day if you want, but the tree runs between birch forests are where Niseko built its reputation. The off-piste zones open when patrol deems them safe (usually mid-January), and on powder days you'll see people lined up at the top of Hanazono before first chair. The village has gotten international fast—menus in English, Australian-run bars, Thai food on the main street—but the snow hasn't changed.
