Shuzenji Onsen (修善寺温泉) is a historic hot spring town in the heart of the Izu Peninsula, founded 1,200 years ago when Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi struck the Katsura River with his staff and created the Tokko-no-yu hot spring. The town preserves traditional onsen atmosphere with willow-lined river walks, bamboo forests, vermillion bridges, and ryokan offering kaiseki meals and private rotenburo baths.

The town's centerpiece is Shuzenji Temple, a Soto Zen temple dating to 807 AD, surrounded by maple trees that create spectacular autumn colors (November). The compact downtown allows walking between temple, river, public bathhouses, and shopping streets within 15 minutes. Shuzenji represents traditional Japanese onsen town aesthetics — slower-paced, quieter, and more culturally immersive than resort-style Atami.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Ryokan selection:** Recommended properties: Asaba (あさば, ¥60,000+/night, 500-year-old garden, Noh theater stage, Michelin-level kaiseki — ultra-luxury experience), Yagyu-no-sho (柳生の庄, ¥25,000–40,000, modern Japanese design, river-view rotenburo rooms), Kikuya (菊屋, ¥18,000–28,000, historic building, excellent value for traditional atmosphere). All include breakfast and dinner (kaiseki). Book 2–3 months ahead for autumn foliage season (Nov) or cherry blossom (late March–early April). **Bamboo Forest Path:** The Takebayashi (竹林の小径, 'Bamboo Grove Path') is a 400-meter walk through towering bamboo along the Katsura River. The path is illuminated at night (sunset–21:00) creating atmospheric evening stroll. Best photography light: early morning (7:00–9:00) when sunlight filters through bamboo creating dramatic shafts of light, or dusk (17:00–18:30) when golden hour side-lighting emphasizes bamboo vertical lines. Avoid midday when overhead light creates harsh shadows. **Autumn foliage timing:** Shuzenji's maple trees peak mid-to-late November (varies ±1 week annually depending on temperature). The temple grounds and Katsura River banks are the focus — approximately 300 maple trees turn crimson and gold. Night illumination (17:00–21:00 during peak season) adds dramatic lighting to temple and trees. Crowds are manageable compared to Kyoto — weekdays see light visitor traffic. Combine with onsen bathing for ideal autumn experience.
