Torihei Honten

Ask anyone from Gunma what they eat at a school sports day, a funeral, a company outing or a hanami, and the answer is a Torihei torimeshi box. The dish is simple to the point of austerity: sliced chicken, coated in a soy-based sauce the company has used since 1953, laid over rice in a wood-grain box. The bamboo grade uses breast meat only; the pine grade adds thigh. There is no garnish to speak of and no attempt at elaboration.
Torihei now runs shops across Gunma and into neighbouring prefectures, but the head shop in Maebashi is the original site and has a full sit-down restaurant above the takeaway counter, including private banquet floors used for the kind of local gatherings that made the brand. Eating in gets you the same thing hot rather than at room temperature, which is a different and better dish.
