Yonago Castle Ruins — location in Tottori, Yonago

Tottori · Yonago

35.4389°N, 133.3347°E

Yonago Castle once stood as one of the most strategically important fortifications in western Japan, commanding views over Yumigahama Peninsula, Lake Nakaumi, and the Sea of Japan. The castle was dismantled in 1875 during the Meiji government's castle-destruction campaign, leaving only the impressive stone foundations and the mountain itself. Today, the ruins provide one of the finest 360-degree viewpoints in the San'in region — on clear days, Mt. Daisen rises to the south, the Shimane Peninsula extends west, and the volcanic Oki Islands appear as silhouettes offshore.

The Near the base to the summit follows the original castle approach through stone walls and gate foundations. Cherry trees planted along the path bloom in early April, making this a popular hanami (flower-viewing) spot. The summit platform, where the castle keep once stood, now features a replica viewing turret and informational panels explaining the castle's layout and history.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Optimal viewing conditions:** The castle ruins offer the best visibility November–March when winter high-pressure systems create crystal-clear skies. On these rare perfect days, you can see the Oki Islands (60 km offshore), the full Shimane Peninsula coastline, and even as far as Matsue Castle tower (45 km west). Download the 'AR Castle Reconstruction' app (free, Japanese/English) to see a digital overlay of the original castle buildings superimposed on the current ruins using your phone camera. **Cherry blossom season:** The approach path and summit are lined with 400+ cherry trees that bloom early April (typically April 1–10). The combination of pink blossoms framing the panoramic sea and mountain views creates one of the finest hanami settings in western Japan. Night illumination (18:00–21:00 during bloom week) adds a magical dimension. Arrive before 9:00 to secure a spot for picnic seating — weekends are crowded. **Sunset strategy:** The western view over Miho Bay and Lake Nakaumi provides unobstructed sunset horizons. The lake surface reflects golden light creating double-image sunsets. Time your arrival for 30 minutes before sunset (check seasonal sunset time) to explore the summit before the main event. Bring a light jacket — the exposed summit gets windy after dark. **Historical context:** The stone walls you see today were constructed using the 'nozura-zumi' technique (irregular stones fitted without mortar), a method that has survived 400+ years of earthquakes. The walls alone justify the visit for castle architecture enthusiasts. **Combine with:** After descending, walk 10 minutes to Yonago's retro shopping arcade (Kaname-cho) — a shotengai with Showa-era nostalgia, local cafes, and the Yonago City Museum of Art (米子市美術館, free entry) housed in a converted rice warehouse.
