Tottori 20th Century Pear
Tottori · Tottori City

Tottori produces 50% of Japan's 20th Century pears (nijisseiki nashi), a variety prized for its crisp texture, high water content, and delicate sweetness. The fruit is Japan's finest pear — larger than an apple, with pale yellow-green skin and translucent white flesh that crunches like the best autumn apple but with a lighter, more refined sweetness. The 20th Century Pear Museum in Kurayoshi is the world's only museum dedicated to a single pear variety, featuring cultivation history, cross-section displays, and — most importantly — all-you-can-eat pear tastings in season (August–October).
Beyond the museum, numerous orchards around Tottori City offer pear-picking experiences where visitors climb ladders into the trees and select fruit to eat on the spot or purchase by weight. The orchards also produce pear wines, pear ciders, dried pear chips, and pear jelly — all showcasing the fruit's versatility beyond fresh eating.
