Amabikisan Rakuhoji is a hillside temple founded, by its own account, in 587, and for centuries it has been the place people in this part of the Kanto come to pray for a safe birth and a healthy child. The name means rain-pulling: an emperor is said to have prayed here to end a drought.

What draws non-pilgrims is the hydrangeas — several thousand plants across the slope from early June into mid July, including cut blooms floated in the stone water basins so that the surfaces become sheets of blue and pink. Peacocks wander the grounds loose, which is not something the temple explains and which nobody seems to find remarkable. There is a long stone stairway up from the lower car park, and a second car park higher up for anyone who would rather not climb it.

Motoki, Sakuragawa. Car recommended — from Tsuchiura-Kita IC follow Route 125 toward Shimotsuma for about 14 km, or from Sakuragawa-Chikusei IC follow Route 50 and Prefectural Route 41. Free to visit. Parking for around 500 regular cars and 10 large vehicles across two lots, one at the foot of the stone stairway and one higher up beside the temple.

**Early June to mid July for the hydrangeas.** The floating flower basins are the image the temple is known for and they only exist during the festival period. Outside it the slope is green and quiet. **Park high if the stairway is a problem.** There are two lots — one below the stone steps and one further up beside the buildings. The upper one removes the climb entirely. **The peacocks are real and loose.** Two of them wander the grounds. They are used to people and will walk straight past you. **It is a working prayer site.** The safe-childbirth tradition means a steady flow of families with a specific purpose, particularly at weekends. Behave accordingly; this is not primarily a garden. **Combine with Makabe.** The preserved merchant town is about fifteen minutes away in the same city and the two together make a comfortable half-day.
