Takayu sits at around 750 metres on the road up to the Bandai-Azuma Skyline and its water is white sulphur — properly cloudy, strongly eggy, and delivered to the baths by gravity from the source without pumps, heating or added water. Attaka-yu is the village's public bathhouse and is one of the closest facilities to the source itself.

Everything is outdoors. There are separate men's and women's open-air baths, one lined in wood and one in rock, plus a private rentable bath, and the water runs over the rim continuously rather than being recirculated. It costs ¥250 for adults, which for undiluted sulphur water at this quality is close to absurd. It is closed on Thursdays outside the busy seasons and has thirty-eight parking spaces.

Takayu, Machi-niwasaka, Fukushima City, on the road toward the Bandai-Azuma Skyline. About 30–by car or bus from Fukushima Station. Closed Thursdays, though it may open on Thursdays in peak seasons. Admission ¥250 for junior high school students and above and ¥120 for ages 1 and up. All baths are open-air; 38 parking spaces. A private open-air bath is available for hire.

**All the baths are outdoors.** There is no indoor tub. In February at 750 metres that is the experience rather than a drawback, but plan the walk from the changing room accordingly. **Sulphur stains silver and some fabrics.** Take rings and necklaces off before getting in. It will also stay on your skin and in your hair for the rest of the day, which regulars consider the point. **Gravity-fed from the source.** No pump, no reheating, no added water. Takayu is one of the few springs in Japan certified for this and Attaka-yu is among the closest facilities to the source. **Combine with the Skyline.** Takayu is on the way up to Jododaira, which makes a bath here the natural end of a day on the mountain. **Closed Thursdays, usually.** With exceptions in busy seasons. Worth confirming rather than assuming.
