Chiba Prefecture produces 80% of Japan's domestic peanuts, a dominance that began in the Meiji era when sandy coastal soils proved ideal for peanut cultivation. The peanuts here are treated as premium produce — varieties are named and prized like wine grapes. The 'Chiba Handachi' varietal, with its large kernels and sweet, buttery flavor, is the most sought-after and commands prices triple that of imported peanuts.

Chiba peanuts are consumed in forms beyond roasted nuts: miso-peanut paste (peanuts ground with miso for rice topping), peanut senbei (rice crackers), peanut soft-serve ice cream, and peanut mochi. The Narita Airport terminal shops dedicate entire sections to peanut souvenirs — a final taste of Chiba for departing travelers.

独家私藏情报

**Varietal guide:** 'Chiba Handachi' (千葉半立, ¥1,200/200g) is the premium grade — large, sweet, creamy. 'Nakateyutaka' (なかてゆたか, ¥900/200g) is nuttier and more common. 'Ohmasari' (おおまさり, boiled peanut specialty) is harvested young and boiled in salt water — a texture like edamame, available August–October only. **Harvest season:** September–October is fresh peanut season when farms sell 'nama-rakkasei' (raw peanuts) for home roasting. The flavor difference between fresh-roasted and stored peanuts is significant — fresh peanuts have pronounced sweetness and moisture. **Farm visits:** Yachimata City has U-pick peanut farms in October. Visitors pull plants, shake off dirt, and keep the peanuts (¥1,000 for ~1kg). The experience teaches why peanuts are called 'rakkasei' (落花生, 'falling flower') — the flower pollinates above ground, then the stem bends to push the seed pod underground. **Peanut soft-serve:** Roadside stands along Route 51 (between Narita and Choshi) sell peanut-miso soft-serve ice cream — sweet peanut ice cream swirled with savory miso. Bizarre-sounding but beloved locally.
