Genkyuen Garden (玄宮園) is a traditional Japanese daimyo garden built in 1677 adjacent to Hikone Castle. The garden demonstrates kaiyushiki (回遊式, strolling garden) design — visitors walk a prescribed path around a central pond, with each viewpoint revealing carefully composed scenes. The garden's name references an ancient Chinese imperial garden, reflecting the Ii clan's aspirations to refined cultural patronage.

The garden's masterpiece is the view from Horakudai tea house — the pond in foreground, garden islands in middle ground, and Hikone Castle on hilltop in background create a three-dimensional landscape painting. This composed view embodies shakkei (借景, borrowed scenery) technique, where distant mountains and castle are incorporated into garden design.
