Iwakuni Castle (岩国城) perches atop Mt. The original castle stood for only seven years before the Tokugawa Shogunate ordered its dismantling in 1615 under the 'one castle per province' edict. The current reconstruction (1962) rebuilt the keep using steel-reinforced concrete in traditional style, functioning primarily as observation platform and history museum.

The castle's strategic hilltop position provides commanding 360-degree views: Kintaikyo Bridge directly below, the Seto Inland Sea to the south, and the Chugoku Mountains to the north. The interior museum displays samurai armor, swords, historical documents about the Kikkawa clan, and dioramas explaining the castle's brief original existence. The real value is the top-floor observation deck — watching Kintaikyo Bridge from 200 meters above reveals the bridge's architectural genius and the valley's strategic importance.

**Ropeway + hiking option:** The ropeway ascends from near Kintaikyo Bridge to the mountaintop station (3 min, every 15 min). From there, a 400-meter stone path winds through forest to the castle — a pleasant 10-min uphill walk past stone walls and castle gates. Alternatively, a hiking trail ascends directly from Kikko Park (a short hike, free) through woods and past ancient stone fortifications. The hike offers solitude and exercise; the ropeway saves time and leg energy. **View from the top:** The castle's fifth-floor observation deck (actual third floor internally — the reconstruction added height) provides unobstructed 360° panorama. The Kintaikyo Bridge view confirms its architectural elegance from this aerial perspective. South views show the Seto Inland Sea islands 15km distant. The best time is late afternoon (15:00–16:00) when sun angles create depth and shadow revealing the valley's topography. Morning is backlit. **Cherry blossom timing:** Mt. Yokoyama's castle grounds host 800 cherry trees that bloom late March–early April, concurrent with the trees framing Kintaikyo Bridge below. The ropeway runs extended hours during bloom season (until 19:00) for evening viewing. The castle is illuminated during this period (until 22:00), creating dramatic nighttime silhouette. Bloom-season crowds triple normal visitor counts. **Efficiency tip:** Combine castle visit with Kintaikyo Bridge in a 3-hour circuit: Kintaikyo Bridge → lunch at Kikko Park → ropeway + castle. The combined ticket (¥970) saves ¥210 vs individual purchases. Start at 10:00 to avoid midday heat during summer months.
