You sit on a round cushion facing a white wall six inches from your nose. Legs folded, back straight, hands in a mudra you'll forget the second the monk stops demonstrating. "Breathe naturally," he says. "Count your breaths. When thoughts arise, acknowledge them and return to counting." Within 90 seconds, your left foot goes numb. Within five minutes, your back starts screaming. You're supposed to sit like this for 25 minutes without moving.
Zazen is the thing Zen monks do for hours every day—seated meditation with no mantra, no visualization, no goal except sitting. If you slouch or fidget, a monk walks behind you carrying a flat wooden stick (keisaku) and whacks your shoulders. You can request this by bowing when he approaches. It's not punishment; it's a wake-up call. The strike is sharp enough to hurt, quick enough to refocus your brain, and oddly helpful. Your posture improves instantly.
After 25 minutes, the bell rings and everyone stands for kinhin—walking meditation at glacial pace, one breath per half-step. Then you sit for another round. By minute 40, you've stopped caring about your numb legs and fallen into something close to the mental silence they keep talking about. Or maybe you're just too tired to think. Either way, when the session ends and you stumble outside, Kyoto looks different—quieter, slower, like someone turned down the volume on the world.

For Shunko-in (Myoshin-ji): JR San'in Line from Kyoto Station to Hanazono Station (8 min, ¥150), then 10-minute walk through Myoshin-ji temple complex. Or Keifuku Randen Tramway to Myoshinji Station. For Kennin-ji (Gion): Keihan Main Line to Gion-Shijo Station (15 min from Kyoto Station via subway connection), then 10 min walk through Gion. Taxi recommended for first visit to navigate temple complexes.

Morning sessions (9:00-10:30 AM) at Shunko-in provide clearest mental state for meditation. Book online at shunkoin.com at least 3-7 days ahead. Kennin-ji free sessions start at 6:00 AM - arrive 15 min early, no registration needed.

Shunko-in limits sessions to 15 people - book 1 week ahead for weekday sessions, 2-3 weeks for weekends. Individual bookings accepted (no group required). Wear comfortable clothing - sitting cross-legged for 25+ minutes requires unrestricted movement. Bring socks (no shoes in meditation hall).

Myoshin-ji area has limited parking: ¥300/hour (small temple parking lot, often full). JR Hanazono Station approach recommended. No practical parking for Kennin-ji in Gion - subway essential.
