祇园是京都最著名的艺妓花街（「花街」），传统木造町家沿着窄巷林立，纸灯笼将夜色点亮。花街以花见小路为中心，一间间高级茶屋在此招待艺妓与舞妓（见习艺妓），为企业客户与富裕主顾举办私人晚宴。
祇园保存了京都的传统演艺文化——艺妓表演经数百年淬炼的舞蹈、乐曲（三味线、笛）与谈话艺术。黄昏时分（18:00–20:00）气氛最浓，艺妓盛装往返于约会之间：雪白妆容、华丽和服、传统木屐。

辨识真正的艺妓： 黄昏（17:30–19:30）是艺妓前往晚间约会的高峰时段，花见小路与白川一带最容易遇见。真正的艺妓身穿低调而昂贵的和服（¥100万–500万）并带家纹、白色足袋与独特发型。观光客的变装一望即知：布料较廉、妆容不正确、还会一群人拍照。
