Maruoka Castle (丸岡城) possesses the oldest surviving castle keep (tenshu) in Japan, constructed in 1576 — a claim disputed with Inuyama Castle, but architectural analysis supports Maruoka's precedence. The two-story wooden keep is small, almost intimate compared to later castles like Himeji or Osaka, but its steep roof tiles (made from stone rather than ceramic), narrow arrow-slit windows, and absence of decorative elements embody the pure martial function of early castle design.

The interior is unrestored — visitors climb the original wooden ladder-stairs (60-degree angle) to the upper floor where castle defenders would have stationed. The view from the top overlooks the Fukui Plain and, on clear days, the Sea of Japan 15 kilometers north. The castle survived earthquakes, wars, and modernization simply because it was too small and remote to warrant destruction. Today, that obscurity preserves a rare example of 16th-century military architecture.

**Climbing the keep:** The interior stairs are nearly vertical ladders — not recommended for those with mobility issues or young children. The second-floor space is small (20 tatami mats) and unheated — bring layers in winter. **Cherry blossom legend:** Maruoka is famous for the 'Legend of the Human Pillar' — a folk tale claiming a peasant woman was buried alive in the castle foundation as a human sacrifice to ensure stability. In return, her son was to be made a samurai, but the promise was broken. Her vengeful spirit supposedly causes the castle's cherry blossoms to bloom in snow and rain (霞桜, kasumi-zakura). The 400 cherry trees surrounding the castle create a pink canopy in early April — one of Hokuriku's top sakura spots. Night illumination 18:00–21:00 during peak bloom. **Stone tile roof:** The roof is covered with shakudani-ishi, a local volcanic stone cut into thin tiles. This material is unique to Fukui and gives the roof a dark, heavy appearance unlike the ceramic tiles of later castles. The stone tiles are visible up close from the keep's second floor. **Museum:** The adjacent Maruoka History and Folklore Museum displays samurai armor, swords, and documents from the castle's ruling Arima clan. Modest but well-curated, with English signage. Included in the castle admission.
