Nagai Shokudo — location in 群马县, Shibukawa

群马县 · Shibukawa

36.5649°N, 139.0374°E

Nagai Shokudo sits on Route 17 north of Shibukawa, in a stretch of road where there is essentially nothing else, and it exists because truck drivers on the Mikuni highway needed to eat. It serves one thing seriously: motsuni, pork offal simmered for hours in a chilli-flecked miso broth until the texture goes soft and the broth goes thick. The set comes with a mountain of rice and pickles, and the standard portion has stayed cheap enough that the price is part of the legend.

The room is a counter, a few tables, and a queue. Turnover is brutally fast — people eat, pay, and leave inside fifteen minutes, and the staff move like a pit crew. It opens at 9:00 in the morning because that is when drivers want lunch, closes on Sundays because that is when they are not driving, and shuts at 3:00 PM on Saturdays. Tubs of the broth are sold to take home under the name Motsukko, which is how it reaches kitchens across the prefecture.

Motsuni itself belongs to a wider category of trucker and laborer food found at roadside diners across Japan, shops built around a single hearty, inexpensive dish rather than a full menu, positioned wherever long-haul routes pass through. What separates a good motsuni shop from a mediocre one is almost entirely the time given to the offal before it reaches the bowl — properly prepared, the meat should have shed its toughness and any strong smell long before the miso and chilli are added, leaving a broth that reads as rich rather than gamey. Shops that rush the process end up with something chewier and less forgiving, which is part of why regulars return to specific places rather than treating motsuni as interchangeable.

The stretch of Route 17 where Nagai Shokudo sits has long served as a corridor for freight moving between the Kanto plain and the mountain passes toward Niigata, and diners like this one grew up specifically to serve that traffic rather than local residents or tourists. That origin still shapes the shop's rhythm today — the emphasis on speed, the plain surroundings, and the absence of any attempt to dress up the experience are not oversights but the same priorities that have kept the place running for its regular customers for decades.

独家私藏情报

**Go early or go late, not at noon.** The 12:00–1:00 PM window is when the queue reaches outside. Arriving between 9:00 and 10:30 AM means walking straight in, and the broth has already been simmering since before opening. The Saturday 3:00 PM close catches people out — do not plan a late Saturday lunch here. **What to order.** The motsuni teishoku is the whole point: a bowl of offal in miso broth, rice, and pickles. Rice portions are generous by default and the staff will ask about size — 'futsu' (regular) is already large. The broth carries a real chilli hit that builds rather than announces itself. **It is genuinely a driver's stop.** There is no tourist infrastructure, no English menu, and no reason to linger. Eat, pay at the counter, free the seat. That briskness is not rudeness; it is the format. **Take some home.** Vacuum-packed Motsukko is sold at the counter and keeps well enough to travel. If you are heading onward to a ryokan with a kitchen or back to an apartment in Tokyo, this is the souvenir locals actually buy. **Pair it with the drive.** The shop sits on the road up toward Numata and the Mikuni pass, so it slots naturally into a car trip toward Minakami or Kawaba rather than a dedicated visit from Shibukawa.
