Ornamental koi began here. Around two hundred years ago farmers in the Yamakoshi hills above Ojiya kept common carp in their terraced paddies as winter food, noticed colour mutations, and started breeding for them through the long snowbound months when there was nothing else to do. Every nishikigoi in the world descends from that accident, and the top Ojiya fish still sell internationally for sums that make the trade a serious export industry.

Nishikigoi no Sato is the only museum in the world devoted to it. A Japanese garden with a bridge and a waterfall holds about 200 fish across fifteen prize varieties, close enough to see how the patterns are judged, and the exhibition rooms cover the breeding history and the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake, which destroyed the hill ponds and nearly ended the industry.

**Learn the varieties before the garden.** The exhibition explains what judges look for — edge definition on the red, evenness of the white, placement of the black — and the pond stops being decorative once you can see it. **Autumn is when the fish are best.** Koi are moved down from the hill ponds in October after a summer of growth, and that is when colour and body are at their peak. Winter fish are held indoors and less impressive. **The hill ponds are still up there.** Yamakoshi, by car towards Nagaoka, is where the breeding actually happens, in terraced ponds among the rice. There is no visitor infrastructure, which is the appeal, but roads are narrow and closed by snow from December. **Ojiya also makes chijimi linen.** The town's ramie crepe is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage element, bleached by laying the cloth out on snow in late winter. A separate museum in town covers it.
