Tosa washi is handmade paper produced in Kochi using techniques that date back over 1,000 years. The paper is made from kozo (mulberry bark), mitsumata, and gampi fibers, harvested locally, steamed, beaten, and formed sheet by sheet in cold river water. The result is paper of extraordinary strength, translucency, and longevity — Tosa washi is used for calligraphy, woodblock printing, conservation work, and even currency (Japanese banknotes contain Tosa washi fibers).

The Ino Paper Museum (Ino-cho, 20 minutes west of Kochi) is the best place to experience Tosa washi. The museum has exhibits on papermaking history, displays of antique papers, and daily workshops where visitors can make their own sheet of washi by hand. The process — scooping pulp, shaking the frame, pressing, and drying — takes about 45 minutes. Your finished paper can be mailed home or taken as a souvenir.

**Workshop details:** The papermaking workshop runs continuously from 9:30–16:00 (last entry 15:30). No reservation needed for individuals; groups of 10+ should call ahead. The instructor speaks limited English, but the process is hands-on and visual — easy to follow. **What you make:** You create a single A4-sized sheet of washi using a su (bamboo screen) and hinoki (cypress) frame. The pulp is pre-prepared; you scoop, shake, and drain. The instructor will help you add decorative elements (pressed flowers, colored fibers, gold leaf). Your sheet is pressed and dried on-site; you can take it home the same day or have it mailed (domestic Japan only). **Types of washi:** The museum shop sells various Tosa washi products: stationery, bookmarks, lampshades, fans, and sheets for calligraphy. The thinnest washi (tengujo) is almost transparent and used for restoration work; the thickest (danshi) is used for printing woodblocks. Prices range from ¥300 (postcards) to ¥10,000 (large decorative sheets). **Papermaking villages:** Ino-cho and the nearby village of Kaminokawa are the historic centers of Tosa washi production. A few artisan workshops still operate — the museum can arrange visits, but advance notice (1 week) and Japanese language ability are required. **Combine with Niyodo River:** Ino is on the lower Niyodo River. After the museum, drive 30 minutes upstream to Nakatsu Gorge for the 'Niyodo Blue' experience. This makes an excellent full-day cultural + nature loop. **Best season:** Year-round. The museum is indoors and climate-controlled. Papermaking workshops are popular during rainy days (June, September).
