Udatsu Townscape — location in 德岛县, Mima

德岛县 · Mima

34.0583°N, 134.1667°E

The Udatsu Townscape (うだつの町並み) in Mima City preserves an Edo-period merchant district where wealthy indigo traders built grand machiya (townhouses) decorated with udatsu — decorative fire-prevention walls rising above the roofline, which became status symbols (the phrase 'udatsu ga agaranai,' meaning 'can't get ahead,' derives from houses lacking udatsu). The street features 85+ preserved buildings with white-walled udatsu, lattice windows, and traditional architecture.

The district represents Tokushima's indigo wealth — merchants here controlled the Awa indigo trade that supplied Japan's textile industry during the 17th–19th centuries.

独家私藏情报

**Architectural highlights:** Udatsu are L-shaped walls extending above the roofline between adjacent houses, originally preventing fire spread but evolved into decorative status symbols — wealthier merchants built taller, more ornate udatsu. The Yoshida Family Residence (吉田家住宅) is the largest preserved merchant house, with a sprawling interior, courtyard garden, and original indigo storage rooms open for touring. **Indigo merchant wealth:** During the Edo period, Awa indigo (see separate entry) was Japan's premium natural dye. Mima's location along the Yoshino River allowed merchants to ship indigo cakes (sukumo) nationwide. The phrase 'tono-sama yori asegi-ya' ('indigo merchants richer than feudal lords') reflects their prosperity. Wealth is visible in the grand architecture, decorative details, and multi-story warehouses (kura). **Quiet exploration:** Unlike touristy Kurashiki or Kanazawa, Mima's Udatsu district sees few visitors — you can walk the street in near-solitude, giving it authentic frozen-in-time atmosphere. Several machiya operate as cafes serving local sweets (和菓子, wagashi) and green tea in tatami rooms (¥500–800). **Practical timing:** Budget 1.5–2 hours to walk the street, tour one mansion, and stop at a cafe. Best combined with Awa Indigo Museum visit (nearby) for comprehensive indigo culture understanding. Autumn (November) sees few crowds and pleasant weather.
