Every Saturday afternoon from early April to late November, four hundred metres of Zaimokucho — a shopping street in central Morioka — closes to traffic and fills with stalls. More than a hundred of them in a normal week: vegetables from the surrounding farms, seafood off the Sanriku coast, flowers, bread, local beer, cooked food eaten standing up.

It is a genuine market rather than a tourist event, run by the street's own shopkeepers with outside producers joining, and it has been going for decades. It runs from ten past three in the afternoon to half past six, which is an unusual window and means it is neither a morning market nor a night market but the hours when Morioka finishes work. Zaimokucho also has Miyazawa Kenji connections and a bronze of him on the street.

Zaimokucho, Morioka, about a short walk from the west side of JR Morioka Station across the Kitakami river. Held every Saturday from early April to late November — in 2026 from 4 April — from 3:10 PM to 6:30 PM along about 400 m of the shopping street. Free to attend. More than 100 stalls in a typical week sell vegetables, fruit, flowers, seafood, bread and local beer. Confirm the current year's dates with the market's organisers.

**Saturdays only, and only in season.** Early April to late November. Outside that Zaimokucho is an ordinary shopping street. **Ten past three to half six.** An odd window that catches people out. Arriving at noon or at eight gets you nothing. **It is a real market.** Run by the street's shopkeepers with local producers joining, not staged for visitors. Prices and produce are what Morioka households buy. **Eat standing up.** Cooked food, local beer and seasonal snacks are sold to consume on the spot, which is how the street is used on a Saturday evening. **Ten minutes from the station.** Across the river on the west side, which makes it an easy first evening in Morioka if the timing lands right.
