About Fudoki Japan
Fudoki Japan is an independent guide to the authentic, lesser-known corners of Japan — the places that rarely make it into mainstream guidebooks.
What We're About
The name says a lot about our purpose. The fudoki (風土記) were among Japan's oldest records — regional gazetteers compiled more than a thousand years ago to document the land, customs, and stories of each province. Fudoki Japan carries that spirit into the present: a living record of the country's hidden places.
We're an independent project focused on Japan's off-the-beaten-path destinations. We research and organize information on over 1,100 places across all 47 prefectures — from Hokkaido's snowy peaks to Okinawa's tropical islands — and present it in clear, practical English for international travelers.
Our guides are compiled from public sources, regional tourism information, and careful cross-referencing. Japan changes with the seasons and details shift over time, so we always encourage travelers to confirm the latest hours, fees, and access before setting out.
Our Mission
Discover Hidden Japan
Japan has thousands of incredible destinations that never appear in mainstream guidebooks. We seek out and document these hidden gems — from remote gorges and wild coastal capes to ancient shrine villages and secluded mountain onsen — so you can experience the Japan that most tourists never see.
Authentic Experiences
We highlight authentic cultural experiences over tourist traps. Our guides are here to help you connect with local communities, understand Japanese customs, and travel respectfully — with every destination chosen on its own merit.
Responsible Travel
We promote sustainable, respectful tourism. Our guides include notes on local etiquette, environmental conservation, and supporting local businesses. We believe travelers should leave destinations better than they found them and contribute positively to local communities.
Quality Information
We take care to present accurate, practical details — transportation, admission fees, opening hours, and seasonal notes. Because this information can change, we recommend confirming the specifics locally, and our premium guides add insider tips like the best photo angles and crowd-free visiting times.
