阿蘇山是世界最大的活火山破火山口之一（直徑25公里），內含五座火山峰。中岳是唯一擁有可接近活火山口的山峰——遊客可步行至火山口邊緣，直接俯瞰100公尺下方持續冒出硫磺氣體的翡翠色酸性湖。火山活動等級決定是否開放：氣體濃度安全時觀景平台開放，活動升高時則會封閉。
這座破火山口本身形成於9萬年前，如今內部有城鎮、農田與森林——是人類生活在活火山系統之中的罕見案例。
營業時間
火山口邊緣：8:30–17:30（依火山活動等級決定是否開放）。草千里之濱全天24小時開放。
公休: 火山警戒達2級以上時火山口關閉——出發前請查詢aso-geopark.jp
門票
火山口收費道路¥1,000。免費提供防毒面具。草千里停車場¥500。
最佳季節
警戒1級時全年皆宜；春秋兩季適合欣賞破火山口草原景致；11月可欣賞山口邊緣的薄雪景致
