Nambu Tekki (南部鉄器) is traditional iron casting craft originating in Morioka during the 17th century, producing iron teapots (tetsubin), kettles, and cookware. The craft was patronized by the Nanbu clan and developed into refined art form. Nambu tekki is characterized by thick cast iron construction, intricate surface patterns, and excellent heat retention. The teapots are functional art pieces — they improve water quality (iron leaching into water provides dietary iron), retain heat for extended periods, and develop patina with age. The surface patterns are created by pressing textured molds into sand casting forms, producing raised hobnail (arare) designs, cherry blossoms, or geometric patterns. Each teapot is individually cast, finished, and colored using traditional techniques passed through master-apprentice lineages. The craft is designated Important Intangible Cultural Property.
