新潟的酒藏密度居日本各縣之冠(220萬人口擁有88間現役酒藏),這樣的密度來自優質稻米(越光米與五百萬石品種)、山泉軟水,以及適合緩慢發酵的寒冷冬季。位於新潟站內的Ponshukan清酒博物館,提供日本最容易入門的高品質清酒品飲體驗:購買代幣組(¥500可換5次試飲),拿到品飲杯,從117台自動販賣機式的酒栓中任選——每一台都代表一間新潟酒藏。每台機器精準倒出20毫升的純米、吟釀或大吟釀等級清酒,並附上中英日對照的品飲筆記。
館內還設有溫泉足湯,可一邊泡腳一邊品飲清酒,以及供應甘酒霜淇淋、酒粕拉麵與日本酒巧克力的清酒美食櫃檯。這是認識新潟清酒文化最有效率的方式——短短30分鐘的參觀,就能體驗到市值200美元的頂級清酒。
