武雄溫泉的中心公共浴場「元湯」，坐落於1915年以能舞台樣式建成的建築內——一座朱漆木造樓門（1788年建，登錄為重要文化財）點綴著參道。浴場本身至少自8世紀起不曾間斷營業，相傳其鹼性泉曾為豐臣秀吉朝鮮出兵期間所享用。內部設有造型罕見的露天風呂：泉水直接自地面湧入花崗岩浴池。
