Beaches

Coastal spots, snorkeling, and island escapes

22 spots

Japan's beach culture splits fairly sharply between the subtropical islands of Okinawa and the Kagoshima archipelago — white sand, coral reefs and warm water suited to swimming and snorkeling much of the year — and the mainland's beaches, which are more seasonal and often paired with surfing, coastal walking or a nearby fishing town rather than resort-style lounging.

Official swimming season on the mainland is short and specific: most beaches only post lifeguards and open swimming areas from roughly early July through late August, and swimming outside that window, while not usually prohibited, means no supervision and often stronger currents as the season's jellyfish and typhoon risk both rise. Okinawa's season runs longer, generally April through October, though even there summer brings its own typhoon risk. Sun shade is scarce at most Japanese beaches compared with some other coastal destinations, and beach-side convenience stores rather than full resort infrastructure are the norm outside the largest resort areas.

Surfing is concentrated on the Pacific-facing coasts of Chiba, Shonan (Kanagawa), Shikoku and Miyazaki, where swell is more consistent than on the sheltered Sea of Japan side. Snorkeling and diving are strongest around Okinawa's main island and the Kerama and Miyako island groups, where reef visibility is far better than anywhere on the mainland. Beaches tied to a historic fishing village or a scenic cape, rather than a resort, are common along the Sea of Japan coast and the Izu and Boso peninsulas.
