About Fudoki Japan

The name says a lot about our purpose. The fudoki (風土記) were among Japan's oldest records — regional gazetteers compiled more than a thousand years ago to document the land, customs, and stories of each province. Fudoki Japan carries that spirit into the present: a living record of the country's hidden places.

We're an independent project focused on Japan's off-the-beaten-path destinations. We research and organize information on over 1,100 places across all 47 prefectures — from Hokkaido's snowy peaks to Okinawa's tropical islands — and present it in clear, practical English for international travelers.

Our guides are compiled from public sources, regional tourism information, and careful cross-referencing. Japan changes with the seasons and details shift over time, so we always encourage travelers to confirm the latest hours, fees, and access before setting out.

Articles and guides here carry a single byline — the Fudoki Japan Editorial Team — because that is the truth of how they are made: a small independent team, working through the same research, drafting, and review process on every page, rather than a masthead of individually assigned writers. Drafting is AI-assisted; the review before publication is done by a person. We say so plainly rather than implying a newsroom we do not have.
