Nanamachi Morning Market — location in Prefectura de Fukui, Ono

Prefectura de Fukui · Ono

35.9852°N, 136.4894°E

Four hundred years of the same arrangement: farmers bring what they have grown into Ono, sit down on the street, and lay it out on the ground. Not on tables — on mats and boxes on the pavement, which is now rare enough in Japan to be remarkable in itself. The market runs every morning from the spring equinox to New Year's Eve, from about seven until eleven.

It is small. Two to five sellers on a weekday, ten to fifteen at a weekend, weather depending. The sellers are mostly elderly women from the surrounding villages and the conversation is in Ono dialect, largely about how to cook what is being sold. On Sundays several blocks of the street are closed to traffic. It is the opposite of a tourist market and it is the reason to be in Ono in the morning rather than just climbing to the castle.

Guía privilegiada

**Seven to eleven, and earlier is better.** Sellers pack up through the morning. By ten the street is thinning. **Weekends have three times the stalls.** Two to five sellers on a weekday against ten to fifteen at a weekend. If the market is the reason you are in Ono, come on a Sunday when the street is pedestrianised too. **It closes for winter.** Spring equinox to New Year's Eve. There is no market in January, February or most of March. **Ask how to cook it.** That is what the exchange is actually for here, and the sellers will tell you at length. It is a very different transaction from a shop. **Combine with the castle at dawn.** If you are up before sunrise for the sea of cloud, the market opens shortly after you come down.
