**What to prioritize:** Start at the stone torii and climb the avenue of cryptomeria trees (planted 1625, now 40m tall). The Sacred Stable (housing a white horse) features the Three Wise Monkeys carving — 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.' The Yomeimon Gate is the climax — allow 20 minutes to absorb the details. Behind the main hall, a 200-step stone stairway climbs to Ieyasu's actual tomb (Hoto) in the forest — quieter and more solemn than the main precinct. **Photography:** Morning light (8:00–10:00am) illuminates the Yomeimon Gate's gold leaf beautifully. The shrine faces east, so afternoon light is shadowed. Tripods are prohibited; use high ISO or wide-aperture lenses. The fall foliage period (late October–early November) adds red and gold leaves to the already-gold architecture — visually overwhelming. **Crowd strategy:** Arrive at opening (8:00am) to experience the shrine with minimal crowds. By 10:00am, tour buses arrive. Avoid weekends and Japanese holidays entirely. Winter (January–February) is cold but nearly empty. **Museum & treasure hall:** The attached museum displays Edo-period armor, swords, and palanquins used by shoguns. The treasure hall costs an additional ¥1,000 but contains the original Yomeimon Gate decorations (the current gate uses replicas) — worth it for art/history enthusiasts. **Combine with:** Walk 10 minutes uphill to Taiyuin Temple (separate ¥550 entry) — the mausoleum of Iemitsu, Ieyasu's grandson. Less famous but equally ornate, with better autumn foliage and fewer crowds. Then visit Rinnoji Temple and Shinkyo Bridge (see separate entries).
