Perched on the summit of Yashima, a distinctive table-shaped lava plateau rising 292 meters above sea level, Yashima Temple combines spiritual significance as Temple Number 84 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage with historical importance as the site of a pivotal 12th-century naval battle. The temple was founded over 1,200 years ago and has served as a place of prayer and contemplation for generations of Buddhist devotees. The approach to the summit can be made via winding road or hiking trail through forests of pine and cedar, with both routes offering increasingly expansive views across Takamatsu city and the Seto Inland Sea. The temple complex features traditional architecture including an impressive main hall, multi-story pagoda, and treasure hall displaying religious artifacts and historical items. The plateau's summit offers 360-degree panoramic views that make immediately clear why this location was chosen as a defensive position during the Genpei War of 1185, when Minamoto and Taira clan forces clashed in the waters below. Walking trails circle the plateau edge, passing observation points, historical markers explaining battle events, and monuments commemorating warriors who fought here. The adjacent Shikoku Mura Village Museum preserves relocated historical buildings from across the island.

Guía privilegiada

Premium
The most rewarding approach to Yashima is hiking the ancient pilgrimage trail from the mountain base, a 3.5-kilometer path ascending through forest with stone markers, small shrines, and rest pavilions marking the traditional route walked by countless pilgrims over centuries. The hike takes 40-60 minutes at a moderate pace and provides a meditative preparation for temple visitation that arriving by car or bus cannot replicate. Early morning ascents offer the possibility of encountering Buddhist monks making their own pilgrimage walks and the experience of reaching the summit as morning mist clears from the valleys below. The temple is most atmospheric during festivals, particularly on February 3rd for Setsubun bean-throwing ceremonies and August 13-15 for Obon observances when lanterns illuminate the grounds after dark. The treasure hall contains Important Cultural Properties including ancient Buddhist statues and scrolls, with English explanations available. From the observation points along the plateau rim, you can trace the battle events of 1185, when Minamoto forces attacked Taira ships in the strait below and the young warrior Nasu no Yoichi famously shot a fan from a pole on a distant ship, a feat commemorated in epic poetry and historical accounts. The best views occur during clear winter days when visibility extends to distant mountains on Honshu and Shikoku. Sunset visits offer spectacular light as the setting sun illuminates the Seto Inland Sea's island-dotted waters. The Shikoku Mura open-air museum adjacent to the temple preserves over thirty historical buildings relocated from throughout Shikoku, including vine bridges, rural farmhouses, sugar-making facilities, and the Kabuki theater from Kotohira, creating an architectural timeline of island life. Combining the temple, battlefield sites, and village museum creates a rich half-day experience. The summit area includes several restaurants serving Sanuki udon and regional specialties with panoramic dining views. For photographers, the unique table-top geography of Yashima creates interesting compositions with the plateau edge framing sea and city views.
