Atsumi Onsen is a small hot spring village along the Atsumi River (a tributary of the Mogami River) about 40 minutes from Yamagata City. The onsen dates to the early Edo period and developed as a retreat for Yamagata domain samurai and wealthy merchants. The village maintains traditional ryokan atmosphere with eight Japanese inns lining the riverside, willow trees along the walking paths, and the sound of flowing water as constant background. The spring water is sodium-calcium-chloride-sulfate type, clear and slightly slippery, known for benefits to skin conditions and fatigue recovery.
