**Staying overnight changes everything:** Day-trippers flood the town 11am-6pm, then the last bus leaves and you've got Ginzan to yourself. Fujiya (¥40,000/person, modern kaiseki, architect-designed rooms) or Notoya (¥35,000/person, the Spirited Away ryokan, creaky wood floors, traditional layout) are the top picks. You need to book 5-6 months ahead for December-February weekends, 3 months for weekdays. Cancellations pop up 30 days out—check daily if you missed the window. After 6pm in winter, snow falling through gas light, zero crowds, hot sulfate water in your room's wooden tub—worth the money and the booking hassle. **The photo everyone takes:** Stand on the central bridge looking upstream. Notoya's three stories and Fujiya's wooden facade stack up the left bank, gas lamps reflecting in the river, snow on the roofs if it's winter. Blue hour is 30 minutes after sunset (17:00-17:30 in January, 18:30-19:00 in October)—sky still holds blue, lamps are lit, you get both. Tripod mandatory, 5-10 second exposures, and arrive 16:30 because only 8 people fit on that bridge with tripods. Weekends in January you're fighting for space. **Day trip from Tokyo, doable but brutal:** Shinkansen from Tokyo 6:30, Oishida 10:30, bus to Ginzan 11:30, back on the 18:15 bus, home by 22:30. You get 6.5 hours in town, which is enough to walk it five times, eat at Notoya Cafe (the only food option, closes 17:00), soak at Shirogane-yu public bath (¥500), and shoot blue hour. Bring onigiri because the cafe might be full. It's a long day but people do it. **Summer is a different town:** June-August drops the tourist count by 60% because no snow = no magic for most people. But early morning (6am-8am) gets you mist in the valley, green mountains, and the river running clear and cold. Skip evening ambiance in summer; the gas lamps don't read the same against green leaves. This is for people who want the architecture without the crowds.
