**Morning ceremony timing:** You can observe from the outer corridor — stand quietly, no photos allowed. The ceremony runs about 40 minutes: 20 minutes of seated meditation, then 20 minutes of chanting. The sound of 150 monks reciting sutras in perfect unison is what makes the early wake-up worth it. Tour groups arrive after 10:00, so early morning also means smaller crowds. **Three-day retreat:** Eiheiji accepts laypeople for monthly 3-day zazen training retreats (sanzen-kai). You follow the monks' schedule: 3:30am wake-up, meditation sessions, sutra chanting, manual labor (sweeping, cleaning), vegetarian meals eaten in ritual silence. Japanese language helps but isn't required — they provide English instructions for basic procedures. Reserve 1-2 months ahead through the temple website. Cost is ¥9,000 for three days including all meals and a futon in a shared dormitory room. It's intense but gives you direct experience of monastic discipline. **Winter corridor walk:** The 750-meter covered corridor connecting the seven main halls follows the mountainside topography, rising and falling in long wooden ramps. In winter (December-February) snow piles on the roof and the corridor becomes a silent tunnel where your footsteps creak on 700-year-old planks and your breath clouds in the cold air. The temple feels most remote from modern life in winter, when the forest is buried and the wooden buildings stand dark against white snow. **Shojin ryori restaurant:** Hakujukan, the on-site restaurant, serves Zen vegetarian cuisine based on monastery recipes: sesame tofu, mountain vegetables pickled or simmered, brown rice, miso soup. The lunch set (¥1,800) gives you the monks' diet without the 3:30am wake-up. Portions are modest but filling. Reservations recommended on weekends when Japanese tour groups book tables in advance.
