Fukue Island, the largest of the Goto Islands, has 20+ named beaches with water clarity and sand quality that rival Okinawa but remain virtually unknown to foreign tourists. The western beaches — Takahama, Yorihama, and Miiraku — face the open East China Sea and receive consistent swells, creating excellent bodysurfing conditions. The eastern beaches are protected and calm, suitable for snorkeling.

The water temperature reaches 24°C in August; swimming season runs July–September. The beaches are undeveloped — no lifeguards, no facilities beyond parking lots and basic toilets — which preserves their empty, wild character even at peak season.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Takahama Beach sunset:** The western orientation creates exceptional sunset viewing — the sun sets directly into the sea horizon from April to August. The beach's 500m arc means you can walk the shoreline following the sunset. Arrive 90 minutes before sunset; the transition from afternoon light to twilight creates distinct color phases every 15 minutes. **Snorkeling at Miiraku:** The reef at Miiraku Beach (eastern side, protected water) supports tropical fish populations — damselfish, wrasse, and occasional sea turtles. Bring your own snorkel gear (no rentals on island). Best visibility: morning 7:00–10:00 before wind picks up. **Beach camping:** Informal beach camping is tolerated (though not officially permitted) at Takahama — arrive after dark, leave before 8:00am. The Goto night sky, with minimal light pollution, offers exceptional star visibility June–September.
