Hamamatsu Air Base (浜松基地) is Japan Air Self-Defense Force's (JASDF) largest air base, home to the Blue Impulse aerobatic team and Air Park museum. The annual air base open day (usually October) attracts 100,000+ visitors for aerial demonstrations, aircraft displays, and Blue Impulse precision flight show. The festival provides rare public access to military aircraft — F-15 fighters, C-130 transport planes, rescue helicopters — with opportunities to enter cockpits and meet pilots.

Even outside the festival, the Air Park museum is open year-round (free admission) displaying 20+ retired aircraft including F-86 Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, and T-2 trainers. The museum has flight simulators (¥100/session), cockpit sit-in experiences, and exhibits explaining JASDF history and technology. For aviation enthusiasts, Hamamatsu offers accessible introduction to Japan's air defense capabilities.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Air Base Festival strategy:** The event attracts 80,000–120,000 people — arrive before 8:00 gate opening to secure good viewing position for aerial show (starts 10:00). Public transport is overwhelmed; driving requires parking 2–3km away and walking. Bring: folding chairs/mat for ground seating, sun protection (minimal shade), water/snacks (vendors overwhelmed, long lines), binoculars (aircraft fly high). Blue Impulse show (11:00–11:30, timing varies) is highlight — 6 T-4 trainers perform precision aerobatics with colored smoke. Photography: use telephoto lens (200–400mm) for aircraft closeups; wide-angle for formation shots. **Blue Impulse team:** JASDF's aerobatic demonstration team (equivalent to US Navy Blue Angels) has performed since 1960. The team flies 6 white-and-blue T-4 trainers in tight formations — spacing as close as 1 meter between aircraft during maneuvers. Signature moves: 'Sakura' (cherry blossom, aircraft disperse from center creating flower shape), 'Big Heart' (two aircraft draw heart shape with smoke), and high-speed cross passes. The team performs 15–20 shows annually, mostly at JASDF bases; Hamamatsu festival is most accessible to public. **Air Park museum highlights:** The outdoor display area has 20+ retired aircraft visitors can approach closely and photograph — unusual access compared to most air museums which rope off aircraft. Indoor exhibits include: flight suits and pilot gear, ejection seat demonstration, engine cutaway showing internal components, and history of JASDF. Flight simulator (¥100, 5-min session) allows basic fighter jet maneuvering — simplified but entertaining. The museum is surprisingly comprehensive for free admission; budget 90–120 minutes for full visit.
